5 Ways to Make More Money on YouTube

There’s lots of money to be made on YouTube if you take the right steps.

While Google Adsense is definitely a great starting point, there are other ways to diversify the way you monetize your YouTube channel.

In this article we’ll go over the ways you can make money from YouTube. Before we begin though, here’s a primer on Adsense along with pros and cons of using it.

    Google Adsense & YouTube Monetization

YouTube offers their Partner Program, which allows you to monetize your videos through ads. To become a partner, you must apply through the Creator Studio section of your YouTube account under ‘Channel’ and then ‘Monetization’.

You will also require a Google Adsense account for payment and a minimum of 10,000 total views to be eligible.

Adsense is an advertising network run by Google that helps publishers place targeted ads onto mediums such as YouTube videos. When a user clicks their ad, the publisher will be charged a certain amount in hopes that user will return a greater profit.

As a content creator allowing ads to be placed onto your channel, you will paid through something called CPM (Cost per mileage). In this case, CPM is actually per 1,000 views and can be anywhere from $1-3 on average. This means if you were to receive 10,000 views on a monetized video, you could expect $10-$30 in ad revenue.

    Pros of using Adsense:

    • Passive income.
    • Great for YouTuber’s new to monetizing their channel
    • Easy and quick setup.

    Cons of using Adsense:

    • Lack of other revenue streams.
    • CPM varies and can require very high view count to be sustainable income.

By all means use Adsense as a strategy to monetize your channel, but if you want to approach it like a business, you need to diversify. Try out at least one of the following ways to make more money from YouTube and you’ll see a healthy jump in revenue.

    YouTube Merchandise

Never forget that you have a brand that people follow and support. You’ll be very surprised at how many people will be willing to pay you for branded merchandise to show off as a fan. This is a route many YouTuber’s take that can generate high amounts of revenue depending on your subscriber base.

So, what exactly should you sell? Here are some ideas:

    • T-shirts
    • Hoodies
    • Hats
    • Bags

Luckily for you there are many companies like Printful that will print your designs on products like these and ship them around the world.

    youtube merchandise monetization

You can create graphics using Photoshop or Gimp (which are free) and upload them to their website. When you receive an order you simply plug in your customers information, choose the right product and design then it’s shipped away.

If you’d like to work more intimately with a design company, search for local ones and pitch them your idea. You can hold onto bulk orders of merchandise and ship it to subscribers yourself, which they’ll deeply appreciate.

We recommend that you use a storefront such as Shopify or Shoplo to start selling. Both require a monthly subscription but give you an online store capable of taking payments, creating blog posts, and much more. WordPress and Woocommerce, are free but will require you to pay for web hosting.

You should also go through YouTube’s official guide on creating merchandise for your channel.

    Affiliate Marketing on YouTube

    youtube affiliate marketing

One of the most effective ways to generate passive income through YouTube is by using affiliate marketing. This is a simple business model that involves you promoting another business’ products for commission.

You don’t have to worry about shipping, tracking numbers, inventory and all of the other responsibilities. Once you refer a customer, you get paid and don’t have to worry about anything else. It’s YouTube channel monetization made easy.

If you visit many of the top YouTuber’s like Casey Neistat, you’ll notice that they place affiliate links in their video descriptions. Normally these are links to the gear they use themselves which they make some very nice commissions from.

    youtube video product placement

There’s no better affiliate marketing program to begin with than Amazon’s. You can sign up and start promoting any products you want through YouTube and your other social media profiles. If you have a website as well, add links to content but make sure that it’s relevant.

You don’t have just stick to Amazon though, there are endless affiliate programs that you can use to make money from your YouTube videos. To find some, visit Google and enter searches such as:

    • Keyword + affiliate program
    • Keyword + affiliate network
    • Keyword + become an affiliate

Enter any keywords that are related to the kinds of videos you make. Check out a few different programs and apply to them. They should display their commission rate and what products you’ll be promoting. Once you get accepted, add some affiliate links to your videos and you’ll have another avenue from which you can make money off of your YouTube videos!

    Writing E-books

Promoting other people’s products is cool and all, but nothing is better than creating your own. It can often be daunting to think about developing something yourself, but it’s actually pretty simple.

The best place to start is by writing an e-book because it has no upfront costs and knowledge never goes out of style. You’re bound to be an expert on at least one topic, so consider what you’re good at and how you can turn that into a book. Most importantly, brainstorm what books your audience would actually enjoy.

If you make videos on digital marketing for example, you could create e-books around:

These are just some basic ideas of course but the point is to make it useful for your viewers. Of course you need a medium to sell your books which is why we recommend signing up for Amazon’s Kindle program. For no upfront costs you can upload your e-books to Amazon for Kindle users to purchase and you get up to 70% royalties.

Once the book is live, let your subscribers know that you’ve published a new book they may enjoy and give them the link.

    Creating a Dropshipping Business

    youtube dropshipping to increase monetization

If you’ve dabbled in internet marketing even for a little bit, you’ve definitely come across dropshipping. It has been all the craze within the past couple of years but for good reason.

It’s a low risk and high reward business model that’s perfect for beginners. You list a wholesalers products on an online store such as Shopify and fulfill the order through the supplier once a customer pays you. Normally it will take place as such:

    • You add the suppliers products to your online store.
    • A user purchases from you through a payment gateway such as PayPal.
    • You order through the supplier and they ship it to the customers address.
    • You’re left with the remaining profit.

Either you will manually mark up the price or you’ll be given a special discount code when you order through the supplier. With a solid YouTube channel like yours, you can expect to make some steady sales.

I highly suggest that you begin sourcing products from Aliexpress since you can begin instantly and there are great profit margins to be made. If you happen to use Shopify, there’s an app called Oberlo that will save you tons of time by bulk importing products. They also have a great amount of documentation on dropshipping to get you started.

If you want to find domestic wholesalers, search Google for:

    • Keyword + wholesaler
    • Keyword + dropship
    • Keyword + resell

Reach out to any you find through email or phone explaining you’re a new business looking to source products. It’s wise to mention that you have an established YouTube channel and social media profiles, so you just need products to begin. You should get plenty of responses doing so and they’ll assist you in getting started.

Become a middleman by marketing these products on your YouTube videos and channels you’ll begin to see even more profits from your YouTube activity.

    Selling Courses

Everyone can teach something. Sure an e-book might get the point across, but a course gives users much more knowledge, practice and experience.

To create an online course you don’t have to be the best teacher in the world either. You just have to think of what your subscribers would like to learn, map out the steps and format it.

You’re a YouTuber after all, so why not teach them how to grow a channel or edit videos perhaps? Feel free to create courses on anything you’re passionate about that intertwines with your content.

I’d highly recommend that if you go this route you invest in a WordPress website and installing Woocommerce. There are free plugins such as LearnPress, CoursePress and many others that will turn your website into an online school. You will be able to create courses, assignments, quizzes, and everything your students need to learn.

If you want to bootstrap your adventure into creating courses, give Udemy a try. It is a free platform in which you can upload courses to earn money. If you refer a student through your channel, you get all of the profits.

For the users that search Udemy and stumble upon your course, you’ll earn 50% of the price you set the course at. Not bad seeing as you’re getting free exposure through their platform.

That wraps up our article on 5 ways to monetize your YouTube channel. What have you found to be the most effective way of making money from YouTube?

  • Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

As a bar or restaurant owner, you may not see the point of developing a social media marketing strategy for your brand. Your business exists in the physical world.

You have regulars and foot traffic. Why would you need to venture into the online world?

Even if you only own one small location, a great social media marketing strategy can do a lot for your bar or restaurant.

Wouldn’t it be great if more locals became regulars? If your business became a destination for out-of-towners? Well, you can do both with social media marketing for bars and restaurants.

In 2014, American spending on bars and restaurants surpassed grocery store spend for the first time in history. And you can count on Millennials to continue the trend.

Wouldn’t it be great to get a bigger piece of that pie?

That’s why this article will show you:

    • Which social media networks are best for bars and restaurants.
    • Which social media marketing strategies provide the greatest return.
    • How to engage in social media management as a bar or restaurant.

Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants – The 5 Best Social Networks

Every bar and restaurant is different. That’s why you’ll need to come up with a social media marketing strategy that works for you. Here are some things to ask yourself:

    • How many social media networks do I have the time and money to run?
    • Which social media networks do my customers use the most?
    • How often can I post on social media?
    • Do I need to hire a social media manager?
    • How can I integrate my social media strategy across channels?
    • How do I want to tackle social media advertising and what’s my budget?
    • How important is social media management for bars and restaurants?

Which Social Media Platforms are the Best for Your Bar or Restaurant?

A word of advice. If you’ve only got the time and money to run one social account on top of running your business, go for Facebook. The social network will give you the greatest variety of engagement opportunities, access to the biggest audience, and integration with a ton of free marketing tools.

Here are the top 5 social media platforms that are necessary for bars and restaurants:

    • Facebook
    • Instagram
    • Yelp
    • Twitter
    • Snapchat

After deciding which social networks are right for you, the next step is to fill out your profiles. Here’s a list of information that you won’t want to forget to add across all channels:

    • Opening Hours
    • Peak Hours
    • Locations (Maps)
    • Phone Number
    • Social Handles
    • Parking Options
    • Price Range
    • Reservation Instructions
    • Payment Options
    • Attire
    • Menu
    • Daily Specials/ Deals
    • Description/ Story
    • Website URL
    • Special Services and Events

Facebook Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

Facebook is important for any bar or restaurant because it’s the easiest place to add all of the aforementioned information. It’s also a place where you can upload yummy photos, secure fans, handle customer service issues, interlink your social accounts, advertise, and create events.

Here are some unique Facebook features you might want to consider using:

    • Menu (Daily Special Posts)
    • Maps (Multiple Locations)
    • Services (Online Ordering)
    • Peak Hours (Happy Hours)
    • Reviews (+ Reponses)

Here’s an example of social media marketing for bars and restaurants on Facebook:

    facebook social media marketing panera

Facebook ranks Panera Bread as one of the best performing restaurant chains on its site. Why? Because Panera is aware of two things – the trend in clean eating and video ads.

One campaign, centered around the new “clean” kids menu, reached over 7 million people and increased Panera’s brand awareness.

Another thing Panera does well is create attractive, engaging posts that don’t oversell or over promote. Here’s an example:

    facebook social media marketing restaurants

Pro Tip: Let’s say that you take a lot of photos with customers in them. When you take such pictures, tag the people you know. That way, your event photos end up in more newsfeeds, giving you greater reach. It’s also great to share and promote customer photos.

Instagram Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

The expression, “we eat with our eyes,” refers to the fact that we see our food before we put it in our mouths. A fact that impacts our impression of what we’re eating. Get a dish that looks like cat barf and you’re not going to think it’s tasty even if it is.

That’s why so many chefs and bartenders go the extra mile to add garnishes and flourishes to their final product. But with the advent of social media, there’s a new reason to put in some extra effort when it comes to presentation.

    instagram social media marketing bars

A recent study shows that 69% of Millennials will photograph their food and post it to social media before eating. And there are around 80 million Millennials in the American workforce. That’s millions of people with millions of dollars taking millions of pictures of your food or drinks.

Where do they post those pictures? Well, the mother of all social platforms for food images – Instagram. And while you’re at it, don’t just rely on the Millennials. Make sure you’re posting plenty of mouthwatering images yourself.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for bars and restaurants on Instagram:

    instagram social media marketing restaurants

Forequarter is a bar and restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin. They change their menu daily, giving them plenty of opportunities to post new images of food and drink items on Instagram.

Yelp Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

When it comes to social media, Yelp isn’t the first platform that comes to mind. But for the gastronomic industry, it is one of the top social media sites.

Now, you may think that Yelp is just a review site for customers. The most you can do is respond to reviews, right? Not quite. There are also plenty of other social media marketing initiatives for bars and restaurants.

For example, one of the easiest things you can do is claim your page on the site. There’s a good chance that your establishment is already on Yelp without your blessing. Go to Yelp’s Find and Claim Your Business page so you can claim your Yelp page and enter accurate business information.

Here’s an example of a claimed business page that ended up in Yelp’s roundup of the top 100 restaurants for 2017:

    Yelp social media marketing

Let’s say you really want to engage. Why not consider hosting a local Yelp event? Almost every city in the US has a Yelp Community Manager who is in charge of connecting people with places. They organize and host free events, ranging from multi-course tastings at fancy restaurants, to themed parties at swanky bars.

For example, one burger joint in Florida, BurgerFi, hosted simultaneous Yelp events in locations across the state. Over 200 Yelpers attended the event at their local BurgerFi. The restaurant provided some burgers and fries and got a ton of free, user-generated content for Instagram and Yelp in return.

Yelp event social media marketing initiative

Connecting with your Community Manager and hosting a Yelp event is a great way to engage with people who are already engaged in the culture of going out.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for bars and restaurants on Yelp:

event marketing for bars and restaurants

Pro Tip: And of course, responding to reviews is the most powerful thing you can do on Yelp. Whether the reviews are good or bad, your responses show users that you’re listening. Plus, reviews are a great source of inspiration and a free market research resource.

Twitter Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

Running a Twitter account for your bar or restaurant is a great way to get little bits of information out on the web fast. Plus, it’s easy to integrate your Twitter handle with other accounts so you’re serving up a seamless social media experience.

Here are some things that you can do with a Twitter account:

    • Use it as your primary channel for customer service issues.
    • Post images of menu items that change on a regular basis.
    • Send out a quick updates or messages to your followers.
    • Create engaging content that gives followers added value.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for bars and restaurants on Twitter:

Blue Bottle Coffee achieves two things with this post. First, they’ve updated their followers about their cup and saucer upgrade. Second, they’ve used the opportunity to provide readers with unique and engaging content.

Logic follows that if Millennials want to know both the source and origin of their food, they might like the same information about their cups. Creating such content steers you away from straight selling – Come in and get a hot cup of joe for only one buck! – and into the realm of creating a brand persona and a lasting relationship with your customers.

And don’t forget another great use for Twitter – dedicated customer service handles. Here’s an example of customer service for bars and restaurants on Twitter:

    Twitter social media marketing restaurants

Pro Tip: If you’re a bigger bar or restaurant, you may need to hire a customer service specialist to handle a Twitter account like Chili’s. Keep in mind that customer service and social media marketing are two separate activities even when the former is conducted on Twitter.

Snapchat Social Media Marketing for Bars and Restaurants

As a bar, your target demographic is a little older than the Snapchat crowd. But for restaurant owners, you may find it interesting to note that Snapchat is the most preferred social media network for teens in the US.

Now, the unique features of the platform make it necessary to put some extra effort into coming up with a successful social media marketing campaign. Snapchat is based on sending and receiving content that lasts for a matter of seconds before disappearing. Not the most friendly medium for social media marketers.

Most of the content on Snapchat centers on taking pics or videos and making them fun with doodles, captions, or filters. But restaurants are seeing the most engagement when they create Geofilters. These are filters that are unique to a particular location – your restaurant.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for bars and restaurants on Snapchat:

    Snapchat social media marketing restaurants

Taco Bell created a giant taco head Geofilter for Cinco de Mayo in 2016 that resulted in 224 million views in one day. Not bad. Snapchat users dining at Taco Bell could use the filter on any snaps they took in the restaurants. The only downside? You have to pay for unique filters.

Tying It All Together With Google My Business Profiles

One thing that needs to go at the top of your social media marketing “To-do List” is claiming your Google My Business Profile(s). Remember, if you’re running a franchise, you will need to claim a profile for each location.

Why is this important? Claiming your profile allows you to show up in your own Knowledge Panel in Google search results. That’s prime Google real estate. Knowledge Panels contain nuggets of information about your business, including links to all your social media profiles.

    Here’s an example:

How to Use Social Media to Market Your Bar or Restaurant

Your bar or restaurant exists in the real world, so your social media marketing initiatives should reflect that. Here are 6 ideas about taking your offline experiences online:

    1. Create events and make sure people can find them.

Events are a surefire way to draw a crowd to your bar or restaurant. And that’s true whether your event includes live music, trivia, or bad karaoke. The only thing you need to do? Make sure people know you’re hosting an event in the first place.

After you create an event on Facebook, you’ll want to list it on other websites as well. That’s especially true for bars and restaurants that hold regular events or have regular happy hours. Here are some ideas for local event listing sites:

    • Eventful – Site for local, upcoming events. Pick your city and post your event.
    • Eventseeker – Local event site with ticketing options and a modern look.
    • Craigslist – The online classified ads site has a local event listing feature.
    • Eventbrite – Helps you set up events and tickets, but it’s a paid site.
    • All Events – List an event for your city so users can discover it.

Here’s an example of a Chicago event listed on All Events:

social media marketing event listings restaurants

Do you want to create a ticketed event? Then you may also want to consider pairing up with event websites. In the example below, you can see that the Flatiron Bar in New York City is selling tickets for its whisky and cheese pairing event on Brown Paper Tickets.

Facebook events for bars and restaurants

Also notice that Flatiron’s event is a special experience. Do you run a similar event for your bar or restaurant? Then you may want to take things one step further and consider becoming an experience host on Airbnb. Why?

Millennial travelers are now into experience traveling. For example, with the introduction of Trips, Airbnb added bookable experiences in 12 cities worldwide. The booking website says that 13x more guests use experiences than home rental, the primary function of the website.

The 3 perks of being an experience host on Airbnb?

    • You can charge money for hosting your event.
    • You can attract tourists to your bar or restaurant.
    • You’re hosting Instagrammers and social influencers.

Airbnb experiences for bars and restaurants2. Reward loyal behavior like check-ins and user-generated images.

Are you on Foursquare? Apparently, the almost 10 year-old app is not quite dead. Are your patrons checking in on Facebook? Do they click attending for your events?

When customers interact or check-in with your brand, it’s important to reward them for their loyalty. That’s as simple as offering drinks, free entrance, or appetizers.

Foursquare marketing for bars and restaurants

Another great way to reward customers is to interact with the content they share. Let’s say you notice a great image that was shared by a customer while dining at your establishment. Share it, comment on it, retweet it, or give it a like.

Sharing and liking user-generated content shows that you’re paying attention and rewards loyal customers. Plus, 53% of Millennials say user-generated content influences their purchasing decisions over traditional media or banner ads.

    Instagram user-generated content Starbucks

Starbucks runs a user-generated content campaign on Instagram every year called The Red Cup Contest. Usually, winners receive gift cards. All participants have to do is decorate and take pictures of their holiday Starbucks cup. For 2017, Starbucks issued a cup that customers can color in for even more holiday fun.

    3. Use video features on Facebook and Instagram.

Video and live stream are where it’s at, whether you do it for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or all three. Consider the fact that video will account for 82% of all consumer Internet traffic worldwide by 2021. All you need is knowledge about how and when to stream and a creative idea about what to show.

For Instagram, you may want to consider using an app like Boomerang, that allows you to create mini, looping videos.

Pro Tip: If you find that you create a lot of video content, you may also want to create a Youtube channel. Plus, if live streaming is your thing, don’t forget about sites like Periscope.

    4. Design space that’s great for selfies and social sharing.

Alfred Coffee on Melrose Place is notoriously Instagrammable. The coffee shop is located on a fashionable street, has a hip offering, and is known for its interior design. Having a space that you design with selfies and photos in mind is a great idea for enhancing your social media marketing strategy.

Here’s an example of Alfred’s famous “But First, Coffee” sign:

    Instagram selfie Alfred Coffee

People wait in lines to take pictures at Alfred Coffee. Having a selfie-worthy space in your bar or restaurant attracts customers and promotes user-generated content. Also, don’t forget to create a corresponding hashtag like #butfirstcoffee.

That way, you can track, monitor, and engage with your user-generated content. Added bonus? You can also find and engage with influencers.

Here’s another example of a bar that has created a selfie-worthy space:

    Instagram selfie bar pacific

Bar Pacyfik in Warsaw, Poland, was designed with Instagram in mind. The pink neon lights and recycled Siricha bottles in the bathroom have proven to be a favorite with the Instagram crowd.

    5. Spotlight your employees for social media content.

The Sauvage Neo Bistro in New York City has a fabulous Instagram account with many enticing images of their food and beverages. But every once in awhile they also feature their employees in posts. Here’s an example:

instagram social media marketing for bars

Spotlighting your chef, bartender, or server in social media posts has several benefits. In truth, there are too many benefits to list here, but here are a few.

First, you’re giving your brand a human face and creating a genuine persona online. Second, you’re going to increase your reach and engagement.

Think of it like this – everyone on your staff has at least one social media profile complete with followers and reach. They’re already posting about their work. Around 50% of employees say that they post images, videos, and messages about their employer often or from time to time, and 33% post without encouragement from an employer.

Imagined what your employees would post if you encouraged them and provided them with positive content about themselves? There’s a good chance they would share that content and engage, increasing your reach across platforms.

    6. Create content around trending topics and ask questions.

Following hashtag trends is a great place to start. For example, #food has generated 240 million posts on Instagram as of late 2017. When you look up #food on Instagram, you can see what sort of food posts are trending.

    trend marketing for instagram

After searching for #food, licensed_to_distill’s post showed up as a top post. Here you can see that craft cocktails and mixology are trending on Instagram. If you’re a bar owner, you might want to craft a few cocktails yourself for social media posts.

Another popular Instagram hashtag is #foodies, with 71 million posts on Instagram as of late 2017. Notice that it also appears in our example. The hashtag represents a trend in knowing a food’s origin and story. For Instagram Millennials, knowing the nutritional value and the cultural roots of the food is as important as how well the food photographs and tastes.

Matcha is a great example of a trend that foodies find both healthy and interesting. Some restaurants are buying into the trend wholesale with entire menus made from Matcha. Here’s an example:

    instagram marketing matcha trend

On top of being trendy, Cha Cha Matcha has great brand coherence across social channels. Using a color scheme, consistent font, and overall image aesthetic may seem trivial but it’s not. As you can see, Cha Cha Matcha’s pink and green treats and design rake in the likes and comments.

Strong social media marketing for travel agents is all it takes to get the show on the road. And it’s easy.

Social Media Marketing for Travel Agents – The 5 Best Social Networks

The first thing you’re going to want to do is to come up with a unique social media marketing strategy for you. Here are some things that you should consider in the beginning:

    • How many social media networks do you have the time and money to run?
    • Where is your audience and which social media networks should you choose?
    • How often can you schedule posts and do you need tools to help you?
    • How will you integrate all of your social media channels and your website?
    • How do you want to tackle a social media marketing advertising strategy?
    • How important is social media management and which tools do you want to use for it?

Which Social Media Platforms are the Best for Your Travel Agency?

A word of advice. If you’ve only got the time and money to run one social account on top of running your business, go for Facebook. The social network will give you the greatest variety of engagement opportunities, access to the biggest audience, and integration with a ton of free marketing tools.

Here are the top 5 social media platforms that are necessary for travel agencies:

    • Facebook
    • Instagram
    • Pinterest
    • Twitter
    • LinkedIn

Facebook Social Media Marketing for Travel Agents

Social media marketing for travel agents should start with Facebook. Think of Facebook as your home base. It’s there that you will want to secure fans, add photos, promote content, handle customer service queries, interlink your social accounts, advertise, and create events and competitions.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for travel agents on Facebook:

    Facebook social media marketing TUI

TUI is the world’s largest travel and tourism agency. So, it may not come as a surprise that they’re doing well. But here’s how.

In a recent Facebook ad campaign for Nordic TUI, the travel agency used video, carousel ads, and link ads, resulting in a 55x return on ad spend. The return was 89x for Swedish travelers. Facebook recognized TUI as one of the best performing travel agencies on the network.

And it’s not just about having the right advertising strategy. For example, TUI knows that it’s Nordic customers go to Facebook first, so they provide them with plenty of great content. You can use a social media management tool to find out where your customers are – more on that later.

Instagram and Pinterest Social Media Marketing for Travel Agents

Next, it’s best to join at least one photo-sharing site. In an ideal world, you should have a presence on both Instagram and Pinterest, as the two sites are fundamentally different. But an account on any image-based site is important because the travel industry is photogenic.

Plus, there is a unique connection between travelers and these sites. For example, a study by Schofields Insurance revealed that 40% of Millennials choose a vacation destination based on how Instagrammable it is. Millennials make up the majority of market consumers.

Here’s an example of a social media marketing for travel agents on Instagram:

smartflyer instagram marketing for travel agents

As you can see, SmartFlyer has over 19.9k followers and knows how to take great pictures. Having a strong Instagram following is good for business as 80% of Instagram accounts follow a business and 30% of users buy something they first saw on the platform.

Plus, over 120 million Instagram users visited a website, got directions, or called, emailed, or direct messaged a business because of advertising.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for travel agents on Pinterest:

    expedia social media marketing pinterest

Expedia, one of the top earning travel agencies in the world, has almost 50,000 followers on Pinterest and 41 boards. Their boards range from destinations like Europe and Australia to travel topics such as “honeymoons” and “foodie travel.”

A good thing to remember is that Pinterest is an aspiration planning site. Unlike Instagram, users aren’t sharing pictures of their lives. They’re bookmarking pictures that depict how they’d like their lives to be. Whether it’s how they want to dress, what they want to eat, or where they want to travel. That’s why Pinterest is a great part of social media marketing for travel agents.

Twitter Social Media Marketing for Travel Agents

When it comes to Twitter, you have a few choices. Twitter is great platform for providing dedicated customer service and communicating with your followers. If you’re using Facebook or other channels for customer service, it’s still a good idea to have personal Twitter accounts.

Use your Twitter account to stay briefed on industry news, keep up with travel trends, follow influencers, and promote your content. Be sure to join conversations by using trending hashtags and adding shortened links to your content.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for travel agents on Twitter:

orbitz twitter social media marketing for travel agents

As you can see, Orbitz has a ton of followers and cheeky copywriting. Plus, they link to their service and help page to reroute customer service queries back to their website.

You don’t need to have a large corporate Twitter account like Orbitz if you’re starting out small. Alternatives include creating a dedicated customer service Twitter account or creating a personal Twitter account and linking back to your website or other social media accounts.

For example, KLM runs a Twitter account that keeps travelers updated on important information through tweets and provides them with customer service through private messaging. Yes, KLM is a large airline with the capacity to provide customer service in 10 languages. But their hybrid approach to Twitter is achievable on a smaller scale.

LinkedIn Social Media Marketing for Travel Agents

Finally, LinkedIn is a great way to become a thought leader in your industry, to run recruitment campaigns when you’re hiring, and to network with important people.

Besides, the site is for professional working people. And working people have vacation days and take business trips. Not a bad place to post enticing images and content that shows how nice it is to go on vacation and get away from it all.

Other Social Media Marketing Options for Travel Agents

You may also want to consider Youtube. Why? Consider the fact that video will account for 82% of all consumer Internet traffic worldwide by 2021. Plus, video brings travel locations alive. There are plenty of free tools to help you make videos, and you can share your videos on Facebook and Instagram as well.

Here’s an example of social media marketing for travel agents on Youtube:

CruiseOne Youtube marketing for travel agents

Here, CruiseOne made a video that takes you on a tour of the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas cruise ship. The video has over 500,000 views and the travel agency has almost 2k subscribers. Plus, they can post the video on their website and other social media channels.

Pro Tip: The more integrated your content, the easier it is for users to engage. That’s why you should interlink all your social accounts and your website. Also, place sharing buttons in strategic places on your website. For example, place Pinterest share buttons next to images.

How to Use Social Media to Market Travel as an Agency

Now you know where you’re going to post and how many resources you have. But what does social media marketing for travel agents look like in action? Here are some ideas for you:

    • Stay on top of hot trends and vacation spots.

One way to stay on top of hot trends is to follow influencers, and Instagram has a ton of them.

There are some already established influencers such as Brian Kelly, whose influence comes from sharing tips on how to get the most out of travel reward cards, and Murad and Nataly Osmann, who are famous for the #followmeto project:

    instagram travel influencer

Why should you pay attention to influencers?

Exhibit A: In 2015, a small community in New Zealand invited influencers to come for a visit. The result was a 14% increase in tourism for Wanaka – the biggest jump in the country. All because some Instagrammers came and took pictures.

That’s in part because Instagram users are some of the most engaged social media users – 10x more than Facebook users for example. And many people are now choosing destinations only to recreate images they find on Instagram.

Social media marketing for travel agents is also about engaging with influencers who talk about trendy topics. To find such influencers you’ll want to use a social media management tool.

Let’s say you read on Lonely Planet that Seville, Spain will be the top city to visit in 2018. By plugging “Seville” and “travel” into a social media management tool, you can find out which influencers are talking about traveling to Seville.

Here’s what it looks like in action:

Here you can see that Instagrammer Kenny Powers has the greatest reach and estimated ad equivalent for his posts about Seville. Here’s one of his posts:

Just from this post, you can see that Plaza de España is a beautiful Instagram location. You can see which hashtags might be trending and follow them to see where they take you. Plus you can follow and engage with influencers like Kenny, which may lead to a collaboration or a sale.

    • Spread the word about promotions and deals.

Put your social media accounts to good use by spreading the word about your deals and promotions. You can use any of your accounts to inform customers about deals.

Also, it’s worth it to note that Millennial travelers are now into experience traveling. Social media marketing for travel agents can start with posts about deals, discounts, and promos. But giving your customers access to experiences provides added value and extra incentive to book a trip.

For example, with the introduction of Trips, Airbnb added bookable experiences in 12 cities worldwide. In September 2017, the addition of experiences for New York City marked Airbnb’s entrance into its 40th market. Airbnb says that 13x more guests use experiences than home rental, the primary function of the website.

    • Hold sweepstakes and run contests on social.

Facebook is a great platform for conducting contests or sweepstakes. There are also some free social media marketing tools for Facebook that you can use to help you choose winners and run contests. You can also use Twitter or Instagram.

Here’s an example of a give away that Expedia had via chat on Twitter:

    • Crowdsource images and promote user-generated content.

User-generated content can take social media marketing for travel agents to the next level. That’s because the travel industry is perfect for user-generated content. Think about it. When do people take pictures? Well, with the advent of smartphones some people take selfies nonstop.

But most people photograph important life events like births, weddings, and graduations. And most people still take tons of pictures on their vacations. Plus, the big influencers, such as photographer Kirsten Alana, dedicate their social accounts to nothing but travel photos.

But why would you want to retweet or share so-and-so’s vacation pictures? Research shows that Millennials (aka most consumers) trust user-generated content above all other forms of social media marketing for travel agents. Plus, 53% say user-generated content influences their purchasing decisions over traditional media or banner ads.

But how do you put great user-generated content to good use?

To begin, find content that you can share. You can share images, reviews, or positive feedback from customers. You don’t have to share influencer content. But you can find micro-influencers by using social media management tools.

You can also create photo contests where your followers send you images of their vacations. The key is to give credit to the owner after featuring content on your social channels or website.

    • Push your blog content, add reviews, and curate great travel content.

Having a blog with travel related content is a great way to generate traffic for your site and to have content to share with your fans and followers. So, let’s say you do have a blog.

Your social media marketer (or you) and your content manager should coordinate posts. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a free workflow tool like Trello to schedule content. Social media marketing for travel agents can also involve community management and comment mitigation.

Let’s say you don’t have a blog. You still need to share content on a regular basis across all your social media profiles. Not posting is one of the best ways to lose touch with your audience. You need to post on a regular basis and that’s hard when you don’t have content.

One way to fill in the gaps is to curate and share related content from your industry. For example, link to travel blogs with relevant content, tips, and images. At the end of the day, all you need to do is know your audience and get creative. It’s also a good idea to check out your competition. Here are some ideas for curated content:

    • Articles on Hot Spot Locations
    • Travel Tips and Warnings
    • Packing Tips and Local Fashion
    • Travel Guides and Must See Lists
    • Unique Hotels and Accommodation
    • Bucket Lists and Dream Vacations

You can also curate content when you do have a blog. It’s good to share or retweet excellent content that you know your audience will love. Make sure you follow content managers, travel bloggers, influencers, and industry publications.

Pro Tip: Pinterest is a great place to create content. Social media marketing for travel agents on Pinterest starts with unique boards featuring packing tips, bucket lists, or food. Add beautiful images with great descriptions and then link back to your website or relevant, curated content.

    • Use Periscope or Facebook Live to live stream content.

Video is where it’s at, and live streaming content is the new hot thing on Facebook. All you need is knowledge about how and when to stream and a creative idea about what to show. Here are 7 ideas for live video content:

    • Cruise Ship Tour
    • City Tour
    • Hotel Review
    • Food Experience
    • Museum Tour
    • Street Performance
    • Local Event or Festival

Pro Tip: Before making a video, make sure you’re prepared. Write a script or scenario, check your cameras and lighting, and make sure that your team knows their roles. Live streaming is great because it shows relevant things happening now. The downside is that you can’t edit.

Why You Also Need to Understand Social Media Management for Travel Agents

Social media management and social listening is the next level of social media marketing for travel agents. Social listening involves collecting all mentions including a keyword or topical phrase and analyzing them for trends and patterns.

You can use social media management to track your brand, research trending topics, find influencers, and get a better understanding of your audience. Let’s go back to our Seville example. Not many people are mentioning Seville in social comments:

    social media mentions spain

But let’s say you want to run a promo on trips to Seville in 2018. How can you use your social media management tool to help you out in the meantime? Here’s a sample of the kind of information you can gather:

    • Where travelers are posting.
    • Which hashtags they’re using.
    • Who is trending as an influencer and where.
    • What the sentiment is toward the topic and why.
    • What people are saying and sharing.
    • Who you can tap for user-generated content.
    • Where commenters are located.

For the keywords “Seville” and “travel,” we can see that most posts are coming from Facebook and Instagram. Knowing where users are posting gives you an idea of where to reach your audience.

Social media marketing is the first step for travel agents. But social media management and social listening activities are necessary for any business that wants to stay ahead of the game.

Pro Tip: Loyalty points can encourage positive reviews and posts from influential users. In turn, positive posts about loyalty benefits incentivize others to join. It’s much cheaper to maintain customers than it is to find new ones. Just remember that it is illegal to force an exchange.
